Alex J. Lathrop

Alex Lathrop is a partner in the firm’s Litigation and Insurance Recovery and Advisory practices, where he helps corporate policyholders recover from their insurers. Whether through litigation, alternative dispute resolution or negotiation, his focus is on obtaining the maximum net recovery for his clients. Mr. Lathrop has assisted clients with large, complex losses in a wide array of industries – ranging from energy, oil and gas, railroad, and large manufacturing companies, to emerging internet, technology and medical device companies – to obtain coverage under every major form of insurance. He has particular expertise in recovery of environmental losses under Commercial General Liability policies, often through negotiation of omnibus settlements without resort to litigation. Other experience includes handling claims for losses under Products Liability, Cyber, Directors & Officers Liability, First Party Property Damage/Business Interruption, Employment Practices Liability, and Fidelity/Commercial Crime insurance. The 2005 and 2006 editions of Chambers USA, America's Leading Lawyers for Business recognized Mr. Lathrop as an “up and coming” insurance coverage attorney in Washington, DC.

When settlement without resort to litigation is not possible, Mr. Lathrop has represented companies in all phases of complex litigation in state and federal courts. Within the past four years, he has tried two complex insurance cases spanning a combined four weeks.

Mr. Lathrop also has conducted internal investigations and advised companies regarding compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Mr. Lathrop’s pro bono work includes the successful prosecution of a whistleblower claim for a civilian employee of the military before the Merit Systems Protection Board. Additionally, he has represented a death row inmate challenging the constitutionality of his sentence in state and federal habeas corpus proceedings.

From 1991 through 1996, Mr. Lathrop served on active duty as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps.
