Anand V. Ramana

Anand is an experienced first-chair trial lawyer. He regularly appears in the federal and state courts of Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia, and is intimately familiar with the local rules, practices, and judges in those jurisdictions. Although his practice mainly consists of preparing for and conducting bench and jury trials, he devotes a significant portion of his time to briefing and arguing appeals.

Anand prosecutes and defends lawsuits related to a wide variety of commercial contract and business disputes. In recent years, he has litigated disputes involving banking practices, and foreclosure challenges (including FCRA, TILA, RESPA, and FDCPA cases), property acquisition and development/construction contracts, commercial leases and other conveying instruments, UCC matters, insurance coverage, commercial landlord-tenant relationships, zoning and land use matters, and consumer protection matters. Anand is one of Virginia’s premier foreclosure litigation specialists.

Anand’s commercial litigation practice often extends to representing government prime contractors and subcontractors of all sizes. His government contracts experience primarily includes litigating teaming agreement and subcontractor disputes between government contractors. Anand also counsels clients on a wide range of issues, litigates contract award disputes before the Government Accountability Office and federal and state agencies, and prosecutes and defends federal contract claims before boards of contract appeals.

Anand dedicates a significant portion of his career to defending the constitutional and civil rights of indigent individuals. In 2013, the firm appointed Anand as a Co-Chair of the Washington Office’s Pro Bono practice. In 2012, Anand received coverage in The Washington Post and local CBS and NBC news outlets for leading a team of lawyers in overturning the criminal conviction of an innocent man on grounds of prosecutorial misconduct. The Court granted the habeas corpus petition after the man had been jailed for two years, and only weeks before the final disposition of his deportation proceedings, which were based entirely on the wrongful conviction. In 2005, Anand received the New York Legal Aid Society Pro Bono Publico Award for his successful challenge of an immigration judge’s deliberate disregard of integral portions of the record to reach a decision to deport a persecuted man. He has also litigated a wide variety of First, Fourth, and Fourteenth Amendment issues in 42 U.S.C. 1983 actions.

Anand is currently authoring a legal treatise entitled Transnational Litigation in U.S. Courts. The practice manual will address the nuances of prosecuting and defending cases that involve foreign individuals, businesses, government agencies, and sources of evidence.

Anand also spends time contributing to legal education. He previously taught the mandatory legal writing and appellate advocacy courses at George Washington University Law School for several years, and periodically judges the George Washington Law School and George Mason Law School moot court competitions.
