Tony Tatum

is a partner in King & Spalding’s Atlanta office and a member of the firm’s Business Litigation Practice. Mr. Tatum’s practice focuses on policyholder insurance coverage litigation, arbitration, and consultation, as well as securities and shareholder litigation. He has litigation experience in state and federal courts at both the trial and appellate levels. Recently, Mr. Tatum obtained a $9.12 million verdict after a three-week jury trial in federal court on behalf of a policyholder for a large industrial property damage and business interruption loss. The jury verdict included pre-judgment interest and a rare finding of bad faith against the insurance company. (Trade Am International Inc. v. The Cincinnati Ins. Co., Civil Action No. 1:08-cv-03711-ECS.)

Insurance Coverage Expertise

In his insurance coverage practice, Mr. Tatum regularly represents policyholders in all aspects of insurance coverage disputes, including complex litigation and arbitration relating to property damage, business interruption, directors and officers liability (D&O), professional liability/errors and omissions (E&O), environmental and pollution, advertising injury and intellectual property, political risk, employment practices liability, fiduciary liability, fidelity and crime coverage, and other manuscripted lines of coverage.

Consulting and Advisory Practice

Mr. Tatum also has experience in a wide range of securities and shareholder litigation matters, government investigations, and related audit committee and other internal investigations. Mr. Tatum regularly advises clients and their Board of Directors regarding D&O indemnification and insurance issues related to these matters, and in negotiating best in class terms and conditions for clients with U.S. and international insurers for D&O and other lines of insurance coverage. Mr. Tatum also regularly advises financial institutions regarding bankers E&O matters, including claims relating to the 2008 credit crisis.

Education and Recent Recognitions

Mr. Tatum obtained his undergraduate degree in Risk Management and Insurance from The University of Georgia. Mr. Tatum later worked as a senior analyst with two leading financial services firms in the area of regulatory insurance compliance before graduating, cum laude, from Georgia State University College of Law. He was a law clerk for the U.S. Attorneys Office, Department of Justice and an extern for former Georgia Congressman Ed Jenkins.

Named “Future Litigation Star” in Georgia by Benchmark Litigation 2009-2013. Selections are made on the basis of extensive face-to-face and telephone interviews with the nation’s leading private practice peer lawyers and in-house counsel. In 2013, Mr. Tatum was one of only 9 “Future Litigation Stars” in Georgia.
