Brian J. Murray

Brian Murray founded and leads the Chicago Office's Issues & Appeals Practice. He handles appeals in courts across the country, and also coordinates and tries commercial, multijurisdictional, and class action cases.

Brian is routinely called upon to present clients' most complex and business-critical appeals to tribunals nationwide. He has personally argued dozens of them—including cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, nearly every federal court of appeals, and a significant number of state supreme and intermediate appellate courts. Brian's work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Chicago Tribune, among others.

At the trial level, as lead counsel, Brian has tried matters to bench and jury. Recent jury-trial wins include a full defense verdict in a § 1983 case against the City of Chicago, and a full plaintiff’s verdict in a contentious employee fraud case. Other recent engagements include class actions involving environmental, consumer fraud, RICO, antitrust, and other statutory and common-law claims; litigation against governments involving the False Claims Act, environmental, and constitutional claims; and other complex civil matters including CERCLA, products liability, patent, and securities cases.

Brian acts as the Firmwide Lateral Hiring Partner. He teaches Complex Litigation at the University of Chicago Law School. He writes a monthly Chicago Law Bulletin column on the Supreme Court, "Fads at One First." Brian also serves on the Seventh Circuit Bar Association (chair, Membership Committee), the American Inns of Court Foundation Board (Seventh Circuit trustee), and the National Immigrant Justice Center's Litigation Steering Committee.
