Charles E. Torres

A recognized leader in the New York City technology community, Charles Torres counsels emerging companies throughout all phases of growth, as well as the venture capital and angel investors that fund and acquire them.

For entrepreneurs and emerging companies, Charles advises on a variety of general corporate and governance issues, including preferred equity and convertible debt financings, corporate governance and M&A exit events. Charles represents a diverse scope of emerging company clients, including companies focused on enterprise software, IoT, financial services technology, social and digital media, e-commerce, healthcare technology and advertising technology. Charles helps them achieve their goals by providing practical, stage-appropriate, business-oriented advice.

For venture capital and private equity funds, Charles is a trusted advisor in their minority and control investments and M&A and other portfolio dispositions. He has handled a wide variety of investor-side transactions and issues, ranging from typical Series Preferred and Angel investments to the most complicated private M&A exits; from founder breakups to PE buyouts; from board member counseling to highly strategic litigation advice.

Charles has been a passionate contributor to the New York City technology community since 2000: he opened the first major law firm office in Brooklyn and founded the Startup Center at Brooklyn’s growing Northside Festival. Additionally, Charles is the creator of the Emerging Company Workshop, a lecture series aimed at entrepreneurs. He was the creator of VCs on Skis, a venture-networking event for the NYC community and was a founding partner of Women Innovate Mobile, a first-in-kind accelerator for female-founded companies.

Recognized as a top attorney by The New York Enterprise Report, Charles regularly lectures and offers commentary on a variety of venture-related topics, including venture financing, mergers and acquisitions and raising capital. He is the founder and chair of the Emerging Companies Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

Charles launched and leads Perkin Coie’s New York Emerging Companies and Venture Capital practice.
