Christopher R. Hutter

Christopher Hutter is a partner in Cooley's Intellectual Property practice and is Co-Chair of the Firm's Patent Counseling & Prosecution group. He joined the Firm in 2000 and is resident in the Reston, VA office.

Mr. Hutter's practice focuses on intellectual property, with a particular emphasis on patent counseling, procurement, licensing and litigation. His electrical practice focuses on a large number of technological fields including wireless communications, fiber optic communications, lasers, semiconductor devices, computer software and the Internet. His mechanical practice focuses on a wide variety of consumer products and medical devices.

In 2013 and 2014, Mr. Hutter was recognized as an IP Star by Managing Intellectual Property magazine for his patent prosecution and patent contentious work. He also was selected as a leading patent lawyer by IAM Patent 1000 in 2014.

Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Hutter was an associate at Kenyon & Kenyon. Previously, he supported the Department of Defense as a research engineer at the IIT Research Institute (now Alion Science and Technology) developing engineering capabilities to evaluate the performance and vulnerabilities of electro-optic systems.

Mr. Hutter received a JD, cum laude, from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1996. While at Georgetown, he was a Law Fellow for the Legal Research and Writing Program. He received a MA in Liberal Arts from St. John's College in Annapolis, MD in 1994. He also received a MS in Electrical Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University in 1992, and a BSEE from the University of Maryland College Park in 1989.

Mr. Hutter is a member of the Virginia, Maryland and District of Columbia Bars, and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
