Claudia M. Barrett

Claudia M. Barrett is a senior associate in Gibson Dunn’s Washington, D.C. She practices in the firm’s Litigation Department and is a member of the firm’s Securities Litigation Practice Group, Environmental Litigation and Mass Tort Practice Group, and the Transnational Litigation and Foreign Judgments Practice Group. She is also a member of the firm’s Diversity Committee.

Ms. Barrett has substantial experience in complex civil litigation matters and has represented national and multi-national companies in a wide variety of civil disputes in various federal and state courts and before arbitration panels. Ms. Barrett has also represented clients in regulatory investigations before several government agencies and has played a significant role in several internal investigations.

Representative matters in which Ms. Barrett has played a key role include:

Defending a multi-national accounting firm in a consolidated MDL proceeding brought under the federal securities laws;
Prosecuting various actions brought under 28 U.S.C. 1782 in federal courts around the country to obtain discovery for use in foreign proceedings in South America;
Representing various corporate officers during investigations by the Securities and Exchange Commission;
Conducting an internal investigation of a large regional bank relating to the bank’s underwriting practices;
Defending a multi-national firm against a multi-billion dollar foreign judgment issued in an Ecuadorian court;
Prosecuting CERCLA claims on behalf of government contractors;
Defending national retailers in class actions alleging fraudulent advertising and deceptive business practices;
Representing a multi-national bank in private arbitration arising out of the 2001 economic crisis in Argentina; and
Prosecuting various trademark infringement actions for the unauthorized use of our clients' marks in cyberspace.

In addition to her substantial litigation experience, Ms. Barrett also has extensive experience with trademark and copyright law issues and has managed the trademark portfolio of several national clients in that capacity.

Ms. Barrett earned her law degree in 2001 from Georgetown University Law Center, where she was editor-in-chief of the Georgetown Law Weekly and was a staff member of The Tax Lawyer, a student journal sponsored by the American Bar Association. Her student note, “Disclaimer of Intestate's Estate Under Arkansas Law Cannot Prevent Attachment of Federal Tax Lien: Drye v. U.S.”, was published in The Tax Lawyer in the Summer of 2000. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Barrett spent three years working for an entertainment management company in Los Angeles, California, where she assisted with drafting and negotiating sponsorship and engagement agreements for clients in the music and motorsports industries. She received B.F.A. and B.A. degrees from Florida International University in 1992.

Ms. Barrett is admitted to practice in District of Columbia and California. She is a native Spanish speaker and has a basic knowledge of Italian and French.
