Corinne Militello advises on trademarks and copyrights, advertising, and internet issues, as well as on privacy and data security matters relating to the collection, use, sharing, and safeguarding of data, including information of consumers, patients, and employees.
Ms. Militello advises on all aspects of brand protection—from trademark clearance through registration and enforcement, domain name strategy and protection, and the drafting and negotiation of trademark license and settlement agreements. She drafts and negotiates agreements involving copyrightable works, independent contractors, non-disclosure issues, and licensing. She also counsels clients on data privacy and security matters.
Ms. Militello’s privacy and data security practice is focused on managing risks by developing privacy policies and procedures and establishing training and compliance programs. She advises on regulatory inquiries and investigations, and breach investigations and response. Her work in this area spans a variety of industry sectors, with a particular emphasis on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Ms. Militello is a former privacy officer at the University of Pennsylvania, where she handled privacy matters for the university’s five hospitals, more than 200 physician practices, and its School of Medicine research program. She oversaw HIPAA compliance, including the patient privacy complaint process, and issues involving the security of electronic records.
At Ballard Spahr, Ms. Militello has represented clients in copyright litigation, information security issues, the preparation of privacy policies, and data-sharing agreements. She also has assisted in internal investigations involving consumer privacy matters.
