Daniel A. Nelson

Daniel A. Nelson is a partner in Morgan Lewis’s Tax Practice. Mr. Nelson advises clients regarding U.S. and international tax and commercial considerations related to the efficient structuring of transactions and business relationships. He has deep experience advising global institutional investors, including investment managers for some of the world's largest pension funds, in connection with investments in real estate, infrastructure projects, and other real assets. Mr. Nelson also advises sponsors regarding fund formation transactions, co-investment arrangements, and joint ventures involving pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and other institutional investors. Much of Mr. Nelson's work with institutional investors and sponsors is cross-border, both inbound into the United States and outbound from the United States.

In addition to his work with institutional investors and sponsors, Mr. Nelson maintains a broad-based transactional tax practice. He advises on mergers and acquisitions; partnerships and joint ventures; cross-border transactions and operations; transactions involving REITs; transactions in the energy sector, including project finance transactions; transactions involving the formation and operation of private investment funds; equity and debt financings and other capital markets transactions; bankruptcies and restructurings; real estate transactions; and other transactional tax planning matters. Mr. Nelson also assists clients in obtaining administrative rulings from the Internal Revenue Service.

Mr. Nelson is listed in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business (2010–2011), with clients describing him as “incredibly efficient, knowledgeable, and responsive.”

Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Mr. Nelson was a partner in the tax practice of another international law firm.

Mr. Nelson earned his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1997 and his A.B. from Harvard College in 1994.

Mr. Nelson is admitted to practice in Massachusetts.
