Daniel F. Spies

DAN SPIES is a partner in the Investment Funds, Advisers and Derivatives practice. His practice focuses on securities and futures-related funds and corporate transactions, including related regulatory matters. He regularly advises and represents clients regarding domestic and international offerings of investment funds as well as compliance with the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 and the Commodity Exchange Act.

Representative funds/investment products include:

Domestic and offshore hedge funds, private equity funds and hybrid funds;
Public and private commodity pools;
Funds of funds;
Seed capital arrangements (including seed capital funds and seeding transactions representing both seeders and recipients of seed funding); and
Managed accounts and single investor funds.

Mr. Spies is part of Sidley’s Investment Funds, Advisers and Derivatives practice team that has won numerous top awards as a provider of legal services to the private funds industry: two-time winner of Chambers and Partners’ “Investment Funds Team of the Year for the U.S.”; Institutional Investor’s Alpha magazine’s 2014 Alpha Awards top “onshore” (U.S.) law firm serving the hedge fund industry; four-time recipient of first-tier national rankings in the U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” rankings for Private Funds/Hedge Funds Law, and Derivatives and Futures Law; and ranked in the top band for Hedge Funds by Chambers USA every year since 2008.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Spies clerked for Vice Chancellor Stephen P. Lamb, Delaware Court of Chancery from 2002-2003. Mr. Spies is also a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Illinois. Mr. Spies has been recognized in the 2014 edition of IFLR1000 as a “Rising Star” for Investment Funds in the United States.
