Douglas H. Pearson

Doug Pearson advises clients across a host of intellectual property (IP) and technology issues, particularly in the development, management and enforcement of worldwide patent portfolios. Doug represents clients in patent litigation before the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) and U.S. district courts, and represents clients in patent matters before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) including the USPTO's Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He counsels clients on portfolio strategy, patentability and validity assessments, trade secrets, IP due diligence for M&A, joint development and partnering agreements, freedom to operate, and IP issues for startups. Doug has helped clients successfully obtain hundreds of U.S. and international patents. He also assists clients with acquisitions under review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) and matters involving export compliance under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), and regulations of the Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC).

Doug's patent litigation experience includes pre-filing diligence, case development, written discovery, fact/expert depositions, motion practice, joint defense groups, trial practice, post-trial issues, and appeal. He has also worked on copyright and trade secret disputes. He holds a Ph.D. in applied physics and leverages broad technical experience in electronics, signal processing, materials, optics, computational methods, and information technology in working with expert witnesses on what are often case-dispositive issues.

Doug is active on the Emerging Technologies Committee of the IPO and is involved in pro bono service. He was named a "Rising Star" in IP litigation by Washington DC Super Lawyers in 2013 and 2014.
