Effie D. Silva

Effie D. Silva is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Miami office. She focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation, international arbitration and healthcare litigation matters. Effie represents foreign and domestic clients in various industries throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia in a wide range of federal, state and international arbitration matters involving contractual disputes, business torts, partnership dissolutions, FCPA and data privacy matters. She has extensive experience in representing major health care providers, hospitals and health care systems, and physician groups in litigation, including non-compete, contractual and shareholder disputes. Effie has earned Martindale-Hubbell’s highest rating (AV) for her legal ability in commercial litigation and alternative dispute resolution, as well as her high ethical standards. Effie is recognized as one of the Top 50 Women Lawyers in Florida and one of the Top 100 lawyers in Miami by Super Lawyers. American Lawyer Media/Daily Business Review named her as one of the most effective lawyers of 2012 and a rising star in 2014. She is consistently ranked among Florida’s Legal Elite, as well as South Florida Legal Guide and Legal Leaders.

Effie writes and lectures on topics relating to international arbitration, multi-jurisdictional and cross-border disputes, and health care litigation. She is on the Editorial Board of the Dispute Resolution Magazine of the American Bar Association. She has served as a leader of professional organizations devoted to raising the standards for the legal profession and the fair and impartial resolution of international disputes, including the American Bar Association (Vice Chair of the Latin America and Caribbean Committee and Steering Group Member for the International Litigation and Arbitration Committees) and the Florida Bar (Vice Chair of Programming for the 2014 Florida Bar International Litigation and Arbitration Conference). Effie is an ABA presidential appointee to the Council for Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Education Pipeline. She is a 2014-2015 Florida Bar Wm. Reece Smith, Jr. Leadership Academy fellow, a 2014 Leadership Council on Legal Diversity fellow and a Collaborative Bar Leadership Academy (CBLA) inaugural fellow.

Effie is also active in the South Florida legal community. Effie serves on the Board of Directors of several of the leading and most important non-for-profit organizations dedicated to serving the citizens of our South Florida community, such as the American Inns of Court, Spellman-Hoeveler Chapter, the Dade County Bar Association, and Legal Services of Greater Miami. She is also on the Board of Directors for the University of Florida Association of Hispanic Alumni.
