Eleanor B. Alter heads Kasowitz's family and matrimonial law department. While most of Eleanor's matters are resolved without litigation, she has successfully tried cases in Family Court and the Supreme Court in the various judicial departments of the State of New York. Eleanor has appeared as an expert witness, has acted as co-counsel with attorneys in other jurisdictions, and has argued many appeals in the various judicial departments of the state. In 2009, Eleanor was named Best Lawyers' New York Family Lawyer of the Year. Eleanor has been listed among The Best Lawyers in America in the area of Family Law since 1983, and among New York Metro Super Lawyers in the area of Family Law since 2006. Eleanor has also been recognized on the Top 100 New York Metro Super Lawyers lists 2008-2009 and 2012-2013, and on the Top 50 Women New York Metro Super Lawyers lists 2006-2014. Additionally, she has been recognized as one of Avenue Magazine’s “Legal Elite” and “Top Women Lawyers.”

Eleanor has taught family law at New York University and the University of Chicago Law School. She was Chairman of the Lawyer’s Fund For Client Protection of the State of New York from 1985 until December 31, 2010. She continues as a member of the Board to which she was first appointed in 1983. She is a member of the Board of Editors of the New York Law Journal. Eleanor is a member of the following organizations: American Law Institute; Association of the Bar of the City of New York, where she has served as chairman and as a member of various committees; New York State Bar Association; Family Law Section; American College of Family Trial Lawyers; American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers; and International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
