Elizabeth C. Buckingham

Liz Buckingham is recognized both globally and nationally as a leading trademark attorney. As the head of Dorsey's Trademark, Copyright, Advertising and Brand Management practice group, Liz has been recognized by the WTR 1000 The World’s Leading Trademark Professionals which describes her as winning praise for her “commercial acumen and creative tactics.” Liz has also won acclaim for providing exceptional client service. In 2011 and 2013, the BTI Consulting Group, Inc. named her an “All Star-IP Attorney” on this basis.

Liz implements effective policing strategies for clients. Recently, a famous retailer approached Liz after acquiring the business of a specialty retailer. Liz and her team focused on stopping the most direct infringements, then turned to brands that included part of the client’s mark in their marks. Through a variety of TTAB proceedings and other enforcement efforts, the infringers either stopped use entirely or agreed to limitations in products or trade channels outside the client’s areas of interest.
Clients come to Liz for her expertise in transactional matters. When a global diversified company sought to sell off a business whose name contained its core brand, she negotiated a license agreement that protected the seller’s interests in the brand yet gave the buyer the flexibility it needed to run the spun-off business.
Liz develops worldwide branding strategies for clients. She is advising a client on the expansion of its Asian portfolio including the selection and protection of Chinese character marks. A global agricultural business recently acquired a Latin American subsidiary. Liz and her team are integrating the portfolios and developing a global protection strategy based on the client’s business priorities.

Liz frequently writes articles for the INTA Bulletin and now co-chairs the INTA Bulletin Features Subcommittee. She and Dorsey partner Heather Redmond have written a treatise entitled Trademark Trial and Appeal Board Practice: A Comprehensive Review, which was published in 2013 by ALM Media.
