Emma L. Lindsay

Emma Lindsay focuses her practice on international arbitration and litigation. She represents corporate, sovereign and individual clients in numerous jurisdictions and across a wide range of industries, including in the energy, infrastructure, insurance, pharmaceutical and financial services sectors. Ms. Lindsay acts as counsel in international commercial and investment treaty arbitrations under the major arbitration rules and ad hoc. She regularly advises on the drafting of dispute resolution clauses in international contracts. In addition to her work as counsel, Ms. Lindsay has been appointed as arbitrator under the ICC rules.

Her engagements have included representing a former officer of Porsche Automobil Holding SE in U.S. federal court litigation; defending the Dominican Republic in ICC and UNCITRAL arbitrations; and advising an Asian state on claims in the South China Sea. As part of her international practice, Ms. Lindsay advises on public international law matters including treaty negotiation, territorial and maritime boundary disputes and international human rights and humanitarian law.

Ms. Lindsay has an active pro bono practice spanning representation and advice in matters at the state, federal, regional and international levels, including proceedings before the European Court of Human Rights, before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (the UN-backed Khmer Rouge Tribunal) and at Guantánamo Bay. She also represents refugees from conflict-torn regions seeking asylum in the United States.

Ms. Lindsay received her B.A. Jurisprudence with honors from Oxford University in 2001, where she was awarded Balliol College’s Paton Prize. She received her LL.M. in international legal studies from New York University School of Law in 2003, where she was a graduate editor of the Journal of International Law and Politics. Ms. Lindsay served as a law clerk at the International Court of Justice to former President of the Court Judge Shi Jiuyong of China and to Judge Pieter H. Kooijmans from 2004 to 2005. She taught international law at The New School University from 2011 to 2014 and is a frequent speaker and author on international arbitration and litigation issues.
