Guillermo Aguilar-Alvarez
is a partner in King & Spalding’s International Arbitration Group and is resident in the New York office. He concentrates his practice in international commercial and investment arbitration. He handles arbitration procedures under the rules of the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC, the AAA, the London Court of International Arbitration, ICSID, the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, the Netherlands Arbitration Institute, the Inter American Commercial Arbitration Commission and UNCITRAL. Mr. Aguilar-Alvarez has also represented investors in investment disputes arising under Chapter 11 of the North American Free Trade Agreement, and other bilateral investment treaties.
Mr. Aguilar-Alvarez served as Principal Legal Counsel for the government of Mexico for the negotiation and implementation of the North American Free Trade (NAFTA) and free trade agreements with Costa Rica, Bolivia, Colombia and Venezuela. Previously, Mr. Aguilar-Alvarez was Counsel and General Counsel of the ICC International Court of Arbitration. Mr. Aguilar-Alvarez is a Visiting Lecturer in Law at the Yale Law School since 2005.
Mr. Aguilar-Alvarez is fluent in English, Spanish and French, and has a working knowledge of Italian and Portuguese.

In Chambers USA 2010 he was recognized as “one of the top players in the field,” according to interviewees, who describe him as “an extremely knowledgeable practitioner who is a pleasure to work with, giving sound and practical advice.” Chambers USA 2009 described him as a “bright light in the arbitration world,’ both as arbitrator and counselor.” In Chambers USA 2008 clients praised him as a “highly respected figure whose skills as arbitrator are renowned.” He was noted in Legal 500 US 2009 for his “litigation prowess” and is hailed as “completely persuasive....he appears to effortlessly out-lawyer his opposition.” Described by Chambers Global 2006 as “dynamic and business-minded,” and “a go-to guy on investor, state and big commercial arbitrations.” In 2007, Chambers Global recognized Mr. Aguilar-Alvarez as bringing to the firm’s New York office “nearly unrivalled arbitration expertise”. Guillermo Aguilar Alvarez was described as “one of the elite both as an arbitrator and as counsel” in Latin Lawyer magazine 2005, which also reported that one peer said of him, “There is no one I would rather have as an arbitrator if I had a good case, and I would want him as co-counsel for anything”.
Mr. Aguilar-Alvarez received a Pro Bono Achievement Award from Sanctuary for Families, Center for Battered Women's Legal Services in 2009 and was selected as one of three King & Spalding Mentor Award winners for 2011.
