Hugh E. Hackney

Hugh E. Hackney serves as the chair of the international dispute resolution and arbitration practice group. Hugh has tried more than 50 jury cases as a first chair attorney and more than 150 non-jury cases and arbitrations domestically and internationally. Hugh has participated in international arbitrations involving disputes in Russia (expropriation of facilities), Kazakhstan (expropriation of an oil field interest), Japan (litigation over a breach of contract), Spain (litigation involving contract dispute), Kuwait (ownership of first private project for the national petroleum industry) and numerous other matters including power plant projects in India and the United States. He is a member of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Commission on Arbitration, College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, the International Bar Association, the Society of International Business Fellows, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and the London Court of International Arbitration.

He focuses his practice on international law, fraud and asset recovery, complex commercial litigation, global employment law, and is a board certified specialist in labor and employment and family law. Hugh has substantial experience in resolving contractual disputes; all areas of labor and employment law, including union organizational attempts and collective bargaining issues, NLRB hearings, investigations and trials, OSHA and MSHA claims, investigations and trials, FLSA claims, investigations, and trials; investigation and trial of Title VII claims, civil rights claims, wrongful termination claims, sexual harassment and other employment related claims, including international experience; international disputes, arbitration, and mediation; immigration law including intercompany transfers, processing of claims and trials. He also has experience in trade secret cases, liability and fraud cases, aircraft and airline claims, international dispute and arbitration, lender liability, oil and gas, construction law, the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, RICO, family law, and wrongful termination claims.

Hugh has substantial experience appearing before federal and state administrative agencies and trying administrative cases. He is an experienced certified mediator and has completed mediation training through the American Academy of Attorney-Mediators, Inc. He is an American Arbitration Association and Committee for Public Resources certified mediator/arbitrator on national panels for commercial disputes and labor and employment issues.

Hugh has participated as a U.S. delegate and speaker at symposia on labor and employment law and economics in Russia and Azerbaijan. He has worked with clients on wide ranging matters in Azerbaijan, Cameroon, the Czech Republic, China, Costa Rica, Equatorial Guinea, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Mexico, Niger, Nigeria, Panama, Romania, Russia, and Turkey. He has delivered lectures in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Mexico, Panama, and Turkey on legal issues. He lectured at the EWI-SIBF Central Eurasian Leadership Alliance two-week course in Istanbul, Turkey. He has assisted in the Dedman School of Law at Southern Methodist University in a State Department project to improve understanding of the Western legal system and the Rule of Law in the countries of Oman, Qatar, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.
