James Nelson, the Partner-in-Charge of Venable’s San Francisco office, is a Chambers and Legal 500-ranked corporate attorney with a focus on intellectual property and significant experience in technology and sourcing transactions. He represents companies engaged in the development, production and commercialization of intellectual property assets, as well as a host of corporate matters, including financing, company formation, joint ventures and general M&A matters.

Mr. Nelson routinely works with internet-centric businesses driving revenue and customer growth through the use of the web for sales and distribution as well as those that support and promote technologies that underpin the internet largely focusing on new media and marketing, security, privacy, and telecommunications.

Mr. Nelson has particular experience with sourcing transactions - working with both major corporate customers as well as technology and business process vendors. He has led sourcing transactions involving traditional call center operations, information technology, real estate management and business process outsourcing services. These sourcing deals have been competitive bid and sole source and many have involved working in cooperation with third party intermediaries.

His technology transaction work involves the acquisition, licensing or disposition of intellectual property assets. He also provides counsel to early stage companies in corporate matters related to formation, funding, and day to day operations. He also counsels companies regarding privacy matters, including compliance with foreign and domestic privacy laws and standards.

Mr. Nelson's clients range from startups to Fortune 100 companies and represent a wide range of sectors, including the financial services, technology, media, pharmaceuticals, consumer products and communications industries.
