James M. Amend

Partner Jim Amend

has been litigating and counseling in the intellectual property field since helping found the Firm's intellectual property department. The fields of technology in which he has had experience include electronics, computers, automotive, chemistry, manufacturing and packaging. He has tried many patent infringement cases to judge and jury in those and other fields, and has counseled clients on patent infringement and validity questions and licensing. Jim has also had extensive experience in litigating and counseling in the trademark, unfair competition, advertising and copyright fields for major U.S. and foreign companies. Jim has been on the faculty of the Stanford University Law School, where he taught courses in patent law and intellectual property litigation, and is the author of the book Patent Law - A Primer for Federal District Court Judges, which is used by many Judges in administering patent infringement cases. He is also a member of the expert neutrals panel of the International Trademark Association.

The International Who's Who of Trademark Lawyers named Jim as one of the global leaders in the field of trademark law.
In 2004-2009, Jim was selected as a leading intellectual property attorney in Chambers USA, America's Leading Lawyers for Business. The guide describes him as a "well-known and seasoned trial lawyer" who is "armed with strong strategic skills and excellent instincts." In 2011 and 2012, Jim was selected as an "Illinois Super Lawyer" by Super Lawyers magazine.
