Jim Nelson concentrates his practice on complex commercial trials and defense of government investigations.
He represents public and private companies, as well as individuals, in the investigation, defense and prosecution of claims under federal and state antitrust laws, investigations and litigation under the federal securities laws, disputes regarding trade secrets and unfair competition, and a broad spectrum of business litigation. He also has significant experience in conducting internal investigations, and uses his experience as a prosecutor and defending government investigations to advise clients regarding compliance plans and training.
Jim has represented clients in state and federal courts throughout Texas and across the United States, as well as in international and domestic arbitrations, mediations and other forms of alternative dispute resolution. Having tried nearly 200 jury trials and several hundred bench trials and contested evidentiary hearings, Jim is able to effectively evaluate, prepare and try cases arising from a broad range of disputes.
DLA Piper's Antitrust practice group, of which Jim is a member, was recently ranked the #1 Antitrust Litigation practice by Martindale-Hubbell®, according to the total number of antitrust cases in which the firm represented clients in US Federal District Courts during the prior two years.
Jim served on the AICPA Mergers and Acquisitions Dispute Resolution Task Force, which developed and published a practice aid relating to disputes arising from mergers and acquisitions. He was the primary author of the section on the use of international arbitration to resolve such disputes.
He has participated in programs for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, Southern Methodist University, the Dallas Bar Association, and the American Institute of CPAs.
