John A. Eisenberg

John Eisenberg

is a partner in Kirkland’s Washington office. His practice focuses on general and appellate litigation, white collar criminal defense, internal investigations, antitrust, and national security matters.

From 2004 to 2009, John served at the Department of Justice in various capacities. His responsibilities centered on national security, including intelligence and counterterrorism issues. Both as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Counsel and as an Associate Deputy Attorney General, John advised the Attorney General, the Deputy Attorney General, the Counsel to the President, the Legal Advisor to the National Security Council, the General Counsel of the Department of Defense, and various general counsels in the Intelligence Community on complicated national security matters. As an Associate Deputy Attorney General, John oversaw the national security functions of the Department of Justice, including litigation of various issues throughout the Nation and in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review; the Department’s role with respect to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States; and designations under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and similar authorities. John also worked on various cybersecurity initiatives and played an important role in helping to secure important legislative reforms, including amending the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
