John Fehrenbach

John Fehrenbach is a partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office who concentrates his practice in environmental litigation, counseling, legislation, rulemakings, regulatory approvals, transactions, and audits.

Mr. Fehrenbach’s experience includes transactional, regulatory, compliance, and enforcement counseling and litigation involving hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste requirements and cleanups; energy and transportation legislation; insurance coverage; environmental permits, approvals, and impact statements; motor vehicle emissions and fuels; regulation of hazardous chemicals and pesticides; and wetland, groundwater, and natural resource protection.

Before joining Winston & Strawn, he was with the firm of Whitman Breed Abbott & Morgan. Mr. Fehrenbach also previously worked as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, Environmental Enforcement Section, a senior trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Solicitor, and a senior attorney with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Offices of Enforcement and Mobile Sources.

Mr. Fehrenbach received a B.A., with a concentration in Bio-Climatology, from the University of Delaware in 1974 and a J.D. from the Catholic University of America in 1978.
Activities

Mr. Fehrenbach serves as chair of the Environmental Litigation Subcommittee of the American Bar Association’s Committee on Business and Corporate Litigation, and co-chair of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee of the New York State Bar Association’s Environmental Law Section. He also is a member of the Section on Environment, Energy and Natural Resources of the District of Columbia Bar; the Environmental Law Institute; and the American Nuclear Society.

Mr. Fehrenbach has provided pro bono advice to the Bronx River Alliance in New York. His previous professional activities include: Member, City of Alexandria, Virginia, Environmental Policy Commission (Vice-Chair), Waste-to-Energy Taskforce — Recycling Study Subcommittee, and Alternative Fuels Taskforce, 1996-1998; and Advisor, Governor’s Commission on Government Reform, Natural Resources Committee, Richmond, Virginia, 1994.
