John K. Sweet

John Sweet

is a tax partner in the New York office of King & Spalding. Mr. Sweet’s practice covers a broad range of federal income tax matters, with a focus on corporate transactions, including domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, dispositions, restructurings, spin-offs and securities offerings. Mr. Sweet also has significant experience with private equity transactions and the taxation of financial instruments and products. Prior to joining King & Spalding in 2003, Mr. Sweet was a tax associate in the New York office of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP.

Mr. Sweet graduated with honors from Lehigh University in 1990 and received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999, where he was elected Order of the Coif and was an associate editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review.

Publications/Speaking Engagements

Mr. Sweet has participated in ABA panel discussions and published numerous articles on a variety of federal income tax topics. Published articles include, “Has IRS Permanently Realigned its Ruling Policy on Pre-Spin Recaps?” which appeared in Tax Notes in November, 2008, and “Debt-Exchange Ruling Leaves Questions Unanswered,” which appeared in Tax Notes in August, 2004.
