John R. Casciano

John Casciano is of counsel in Steptoe’s Washington office, where he is a member of the Litigation Department and Insurance & Reinsurance Group. Over the past decade, Mr. Casciano’s primary practice largely involves high-risk, high-value insurance coverage litigation. Additionally, he has a broad civil and commercial litigation and trial background. Mr. Casciano has successfully represented US and foreign clients in state and federal trial and appeals courts in over 15 states nationwide, and has tried jury trials in multiple jurisdictions. Several of his cases have resulted in written opinions in state and federal trial courts and courts of appeal.

Mr. Casciano’s litigation experience ranges from complex insurance coverage and bad faith litigation, to errors and omissions and professional malpractice litigation, to general commercial and business litigation. He works with clients to obtain favorable settlements at appropriate points in the pre-litigation or litigation process.

Insurance/Reinsurance

Mr. Casciano has represented major US and foreign insurers in complex insurance coverage litigation involving environmental (chemical plants, electronics manufacturers), toxic tort/product liability (asbestos, coal, creosote), regulatory (off-label use of medical devices), and property damage and business interruption matters (terrorism losses). These insurance coverage matters often include bad faith/extra contractual claims.

Complex Litigation

In addition, Mr. Casciano has handled a variety of complex commercial disputes, including litigation of errors and omissions, professional malpractice, breach of fiduciary duty and negligence claims against lawyers, insurance agents, and real estate agents. He has litigated third party general liability and first party property damage claims, as well as environmental contribution actions.
