New York attorney John Cashin has committed his career to the insurance/reinsurance industry. With degrees in both law and business, he has over three decades of experience as an attorney, broker, and management executive in various segments of insurance, reinsurance, financial services, claims litigation, and multinational legal and compliance matters. He is also a former insurance regulator, serving as Deputy Superintendent of the New York State Insurance Department from 2000-2001. Mr. Cashin has been a member of ARIAS-U.S. for over 20 years and is an ARIAS Certified Arbitrator. He is also a member of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR) Panel of Distinguished Neutrals (Insurance Panel).

From 2004-2013, Mr. Cashin was with the Zurich Insurance Group, serving in roles including General Counsel of, respectively, the General Insurance, International Businesses, and Group Reinsurance segments, as well as Regional General Counsel and Head of Compliance and Government Affairs for the Middle East and Africa. Responsibilities ranged from managing insurance coverage disputes and large claims litigation to ensuring multinational regulatory compliance. As General Counsel of the Group Reinsurance segment, he provided legal oversight for all reinsurance matters of the Zurich Group, including contracts, coverage, claims, dispute resolution, commutation, regulatory issues and run-off.

Mr. Cashin also served as the Zurich Group’s Chief Compliance Officer. In this role, his accomplishments included establishing a globally consistent and locally effective set of compliance practices and policies for all 60,000 Zurich employees. His work included rewriting the Group’s Code of Conduct - the Zurich Basics - and many other group-wide employee policies carefully designed for translation into the ten principal languages of the group to transcend multiple cultures and be intelligible and meaningful for all employees across the globe.

Before joining the Zurich Group, Mr. Cashin performed as outside counsel for a range of insurers, reinsurers and intermediaries in his role as Of Counsel to the law firm of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, LLP. For 20 years prior to joining Stroock, Mr. Cashin gained direct market experience as a management executive and reinsurance broker with major reinsurance intermediary firms including Guy Carpenter & Company (a subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan), Willis Faber North America (a subsidiary of Willis Group, Plc.), Madison Intermediaries (a subsidiary of Frank B. Hall), and Sullivan Payne Company (a subsidiary of Sedgwick Group, Plc.).

Public sector work includes his 2000-2001 role as Deputy Superintendent of the New York State Insurance Department, where he directed the Property/Casualty Bureau, which regulates financial solvency, market conduct, and rate and form approval for carriers, brokers and agents writing all lines of property/casualty insurance and reinsurance in the State of New York. From 1977-1980, he drafted and negotiated legislation as counsel to New York State Senate Committees on Insurance, Corporations, and Moral Obligation Financing.

Mr. Cashin has offered legislative and expert witness testimony before New York State regulatory authorities, U.S. District Courts, and arbitration panels.
