Jonathan B. Alter

Jonathan Alter is a partner in the firm’s Hartford office. He is a member of the firm’s Financial Restructuring Group and represents financial institutions, commercial enterprises, and official and ad hoc committees in complex commercial litigation and insolvency proceedings throughout the United States. Jonathan has extensive experience in a wide range of matters, including out-of-court workouts and restructurings, asset acquisitions from distressed entities, and general commercial and real estate-related litigation, as well as liquidation and reorganization proceedings. Over the past several years, he has been recognized by Super Lawyers in the area of Bankruptcy Law.

Among other recent engagements, Jonathan has represented or is representing the secured lenders in the Southern Montana Electric, TLC Vision, Molecular Insight and Bernie’s bankruptcies; an ad hoc group of members in the Yellowstone Club bankruptcy and PGA West bankruptcy; a strategic acquirer in the Capmark proceedings; the trustee in the Complete Retreats bankruptcy; and the creditors committees in the Cliffs Club, Infotelecom and Woodside Homes bankruptcies. He is counsel in connection with various bankruptcy adversary proceedings, including a pending action against the prepetition noteholders of Quebecor. Jonathan also recently completed the foreclosure of the Mayflower Inn in Washington, Conn., as well as a contested replevin proceeding. In addition to his trial experiences, he has participated in appeals to both state and federal courts.

Jonathan has assisted various major surety companies with numerous debtor-in-possession surety facilities, including in connection with the Kmart, Charter Communications, American Home Mortgage and Adelphia proceedings. He has provided legal representation on surety matters in countless other contested cases, such as Federal Mogul, Enron, Global Crossing and W.R. Grace.

Jonathan has also been an instructor at the University of Connecticut School of Law, lecturing to many professional organizations on a diversity of topics related to his practice, and has written extensively on many issues. He is a member of the American, Connecticut and Hartford County Bar Associations, and is licensed to practice law in both the state of Connecticut and the state of New York. Jonathan is also a licensed justice of the peace of the town of Avon, Conn.
