Sean J. Grygiel

Sean has significant experience representing and advising companies on intellectual property development, procurement, and protection matters. His clients range from start-ups to multinationals, and span many technology-based industries, including the medical device, energy, construction, communications, fintech, and IT sectors.

Sean uses his extensive knowledge of IP asset valuation to help companies align their portfolios with their business plans and execute smart strategies to optimize acquisition and sales transactions, licensing and joint venture agreements, and IP provisions of employment and financing agreements. In addition, he prepares and prosecutes patents and trademarks, oversees freedom-to-operate studies, advises on product clearance options, and handles USPTO office actions and post-grant proceedings.

As the co-founder and former chief operating officer of Xcellasave, Inc., a wireless technology start-up focused on mobile content delivery, Sean shares his innovative clients’ entrepreneurial mindset and has helped many businesses bring early-stage technologies and products to market.

Prior to joining Mintz Levin, Sean was a partner in the New York office of an international law firm. There, his clients relied on his guidance to help them develop optimal patent portfolios, acquire IP assets, negotiate agreements with university technology transfer offices and licensing partners, and evaluate their risk exposures based on reviews of competitive portfolios. For one client, Sean negotiated a complex cross-license and global settlement valued at $22 million.

Earlier in his career, Sean was a lieutenant and marine engineer in the United States Coast Guard, where he managed significant projects and programs.
