Christopher J. Murdoch is a partner in Holland & Knight's Chicago Commercial Litigation Group. With more than 25 years of experience, he has tried dozens of jury trials, bench trials and arbitrations around the country. His commercial litigation practice focuses on transactional disputes and business torts, including fraud; consumer fraud; securities fraud; representation and warranty claims; insurance coverage disputes; antitrust and trade regulation; and protection of proprietary business assets such as trademarks and copyrights. Defense of a national life insurance company in a jury trial against claims brought by elderly clients who alleged the company's agent was operating a Ponzi scheme. Plaintiffs sought compensatory and punitive damages in excess of $1 billion. After a five-week trial, the jury found in favor of Mr. Murdoch's client.
Defense of an equipment manufacturer against claims that its factory installation did not meet customer's performance specifications. After a three-week trial, the jury rejected plaintiffs' claims for damages in excess of $8 million and found in favor of Mr. Murdoch's clients.
Representation of a large national homebuilder against claims by a competitor that designs infringed competitor's copyrights. After a five-week trial, the jury rejected competitors request for damages in excess of $70 million and found in favor of Mr. Murdoch's client.
Dozens of arbitrations defending broker-dealers in customer claims involving registered products.
Representation of local municipalities in dispute with County Treasurer regarding liability for real estate tax refunds in tax increment financing (TIF) districts.
Defense of a class action against a financial institution in claims involving compliance with federal regulation of fees and fee disclosures.
