Greggory B. Mendenhall

Greggory B. Mendenhall is a member of the firm's Finance and Bankruptcy Practice Group and the Government Contracts, Investigations & International Trade Practice Group. Mr. Mendenhall works in the firm's Washington, D.C. and New York offices.

Areas of Practice

Mr. Mendenhall's practice is concentrated on international and domestic maritime transactions, leasing and financing, U.S. regulatory compliance, and legislative issues involving the U.S. maritime industry. He has extensive experience in drafting and negotiating both domestic and international ship construction contracts and their related financing transactions. Mr. Mendenhall’s clients have included domestic and foreign vessel owners and operators, major oil companies, shipyards and large corporations that own or operate maritime assets as a part of their business.

Mr. Mendenhall has represented clients and provided advice on maritime projects, charters and charter disputes, domestic and foreign ship construction contracts, Title XI financing, capital construction funds, tonnage tax, vessel sales, purchases and documentation, and on management and operating agreements. He has obtained numerous regulatory approvals and rulings from the Maritime Administration, the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection for his clients and has obtained statutory changes to the U.S. vessel financing statutes and documentation and manning requirements of the U.S. Coast Guard. He also represents clients on the maritime cargo preference programs. He is the author of several articles and has made many presentations and speeches on matters concerning his practice.

Mr. Mendenhall spent 10 years on the business side of the maritime industry with significant responsibility for both legal and business matters. He was vice president and director at United States Lines, Inc., where he was responsible for worldwide vessel operations. He oversaw and directed the construction of 17 new vessels; negotiated shipyard contracts, vessel sales and purchase agreements, worldwide contracts for vessel repairs and modifications and managed the U.S. Navy (Military Sealift Command) vessel chartering and operations. His practical business experience adds a substantial dimension to the advice and representation of maritime clients.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Mendenhall was a founding partner of Abourezk, Shack & Mendenhall, P.C., Washington, D.C. He spent ten years in Washington and handled matters before the Federal Communications Commission, the Customs Service and legislative matters in the United States Congress.
