James C T Linfield

James C. T. Linfield is a partner in the Business Department of Cooley LLP. He founded Cooley's Colorado office in 1993 and served as Partner-in-Charge of that office through 2013.

Mr. Linfield's practice focuses on representation of public and private technology companies and venture capital and private equity funds, with an emphasis on corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions and strategic alliances. He has deep experience advising start-ups, venture and private equity-backed companies, public companies and investors across a wide variety of industries, including biotechnology, medical devices, information technologies, clean technologies, and natural and organic products.

Prior to joining Cooley, Mr. Linfield worked in the biotechnology industry for two and a half years as Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel of Somatogen, Inc. where he helped lead the company to a successful initial public offering. From 1980 to 1990, Mr. Linfield was with the Denver law firm of Davis Graham & Stubbs, for the last five years as a partner.

In 1980, Mr. Linfield received his JD magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. He received his AB magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1977.

Mr. Linfield has been a frequent speaker on financing strategies for emerging companies, corporate governance, public securities matters, strategic alliances, and mergers and acquisitions.

Jim is very active in supporting the University of Colorado. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the University of Colorado Foundation. He is also a member of the Executive Board of the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship, and the Boards of Advisors for the University's Technology Transfer Office and the BioFrontiers Institute. He is Chair of the Governor's Advisory Board on Venture Capital Investment for the State of Colorado. He helped found and is a current executive committee member of the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority. Also, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Innovation Center of the Rockies.
