JEN RATNER, since joining the firm’s Los Angeles office as a litigator in 1999, has developed expertise in all facets of state and federal litigation, as well as forms of alternative dispute resolution, from inception through trial, including pre-litigation counseling, factual investigation, written discovery, depositions, discovery and substantive motion-practice, settlement negotiations, temporary restraining orders, preliminary and permanent injunctions, pre-trial preparation, trial-related activities and appeals. She has represented numerous corporations in connection with complex commercial disputes involving, among other issues, fraud, contractual disputes, unfair business practices, misappropriation of trade secrets, false advertising, copyright infringement, theft of ideas, fiduciary duties, enforceability of contractual provisions (including restrictive covenants, arbitration clauses and bars on class actions), consumer fraud and wrongful termination. She has represented individuals, as well as large and small companies, both domestic and international, in industries ranging from insurance, healthcare, science and technology, music, telecommunications, securities, electronics and financial services.

Representative matters have included:

Defending a leading manufacturer of scientific instruments and its employee against copyright, trade secret misappropriation, and false advertising claims brought by a competitor. After defendants prevailed on the majority of claims on summary judgment and in limine motions, the plaintiff stipulated to entry of judgment in favor of defendants. Judgment affirmed on appeal.
Counseling clients in connection with new business opportunities and/or hiring of new employees regarding trade secrets, non-compete provisions, non-solicit provisions and non-disclosure/confidentiality agreements.
Representing large insurance company in cases involving claims of fraud, breach of contract and unfair competition, including successfully resolving matter after company prevailed on two successive demurrers.
Successfully defending a global trading company in case involving claims of breach of fiduciary duty, breach of contract and fraud, that included handling international discovery.
Obtaining permanent injunctions against individuals/companies in cases involving acts of harassment against companies’ employees.
Representing large insurance company against claims of wrongful termination, disparate treatment and retaliation.
Successfully resolving claims against a director of a money management firm for breach of fiduciary duty, wrongful termination and invasion of privacy.
Successfully representing a healthcare organization in several cases in connection with claims of breach of contract and tortious interference with contracts and business relationships.
Successfully representing a veteran in appeal of disability ratings decision and request for finding of individual unemployability.
Prevailing at arbitration on behalf of brokerage firm/broker in case involving allegations of unsuitability, failure to diversify, misrepresentation, breach of contract and failure to supervise.
