John A. Marlott

John Marlott has more than 20 years of intellectual property law experience, focusing on complex litigation involving patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and related antitrust and unfair competition matters. He practices nationwide, having handled IP disputes in federal district courts throughout the country, in the U.S. International Trade Commission, in the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

John frequently serves as lead trial counsel for Jones Day clients in patent litigation matters. In addition to traditional IP infringement litigation and Hatch-Waxman pharmaceutical litigation, he helps clients with IP licensing and transactional matters involving IP of all types.

John began his career as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is a registered patent attorney, and he has extensive experience in the prosecution of domestic and foreign patent applications, as well as USPTO post-grant proceedings (including inter partes reviews before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board and inter partes and ex parte reexaminations).

In recent years, John's technological experience has included computer software and hardware, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, chemical processes, electrical power generation, cleantech and renewable energy technologies, and internet and e-commerce systems.

John is a member of the Trial Bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the Federal Circuit Bar Association, the ITC Trial Lawyers Association, and the American Bar Association (Litigation and Intellectual Property Law Sections).
