John C. Evans

John Evans is an intellectual property lawyer, with a primary focus on patent litigation. He represents clients in numerous patent disputes in federal courts across the United States and in the United States International Trade Commission.

John has experience in all phases of patent litigation, including pre-litigation investigations, discovery, motions practice, fact and expert depositions and testimony, claim construction, summary judgment, trials, and appeals in the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He has briefed and argued claim construction and summary judgment, taken and defended expert and fact depositions, served on trial teams in bench and jury trials, and authored many important briefs. Notably, John recently second chaired a Markman hearing in which the ITC found nearly all of the asserted claims of three patents were either invalid or not infringed, leading to an early settlement. He was also recently involved in a Federal Circuit appeal reversing unfavorable claim constructions, prompting settlement after remand.

John's technical experience in patent litigation matters covers many fields, including utility patents on surgical spine implants, flash memory, computer peripherals, digital televisions, integrated circuits, and insurance, as well as design patents on footwear and lip balm. Representative clients include Celgene, Deckers Outdoor, DePuy Spine, GE, Gillette, Intersil, Procter & Gamble, Progressive, and SanDisk.

Before becoming a lawyer, John did structural biology and X-ray protein crystallography research at the University of Michigan and obtained a Ph.D. in biophysics. He solved several novel crystal structures of enzymes involved in methionine biosynthesis and homocysteine metabolism.
