John E. Iole

John Iole handles a broad range of first- and third-party insurance coverage claims, including directors and officers liability (D&O), aviation insurance (hull and liability), data security/network interruption, and first-party property. He also counsels clients on insurance and attorney ethics matters.

John represents Schnitzer Steel and Schnitzer Investment for reimbursement of environmental defense costs, Federal-Mogul for Thailand flooding losses, and other major companies in a wide array of insurance disputes. Other representative clients include General Electric, General Motors, Lexmark International, Macy's, and Safelite Solutions.

John recently represented Texas Keystone in an ICC arbitration regarding claims arising out of oil drilling rights in Iraqi Kurdistan. See Excalibur Ventures v. Texas Keystone, Inc. and Others, 2011 AER 24. He also represented Motorola in Bermuda and London international arbitrations involving a D&O dispute; Federated Department Stores/Macy's in property damage and business interruption claims; American Management Systems in a $475 million bad faith failure to settle claim; Safelite Glass in a Lanham Act, commercial bribery, and unfair competition case; and a major consumer products manufacturer for EPL coverage associated with class action discrimination claims.

John is an elected member of The American Law Institute and is an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, teaching advanced trial evidence. He was a member of the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania from 1997 to 2003, serving as its chairman. He also was a member of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania Ad Hoc Committee on Evidence, which drafted Pennsylvania's first rules of evidence.
