William S. Galliani

William S. Galliani joined the Firm in 2000 and is resident in thePalo Alto office, where he is the supervising patent counseling and prosecution partner for electronic and software technologies. He is also former Co-Chair of the Firm's Patent Counseling and Prosecution group.

Mr. Galliani specializes in counseling clients in connection with legal issues associated with complex electronic and software technologies. For well over twenty years his practice has been devoted to advising Silicon Valley companies regarding intellectual property portfolio development and enforcement. Mr. Galliani was named "Patent Law Lawyer of the Year" in the 2013 edition of Best Lawyers in America. In 2009, he was named one of the "25 Leading Patent Portfolio Managers" in California by the Daily Journal.

Mr. Galliani has written and prosecuted hundreds of patents directed over a spectrum of technologies including graphics hardware and software, encryption software, enterprise software, business intelligence analytical tools, computer architectures, video signal processors, network architectures, field programmable logic devices, electronic design automation software, embedded devices, microelectromechanical devices, web services software, network security hardware and software, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, semiconductor packages, database software, distributed databases, memory architectures, Internet software, search engines, wired and wireless telecommunication devices, and power systems.

Mr. Galliani's practice regularly includes pre-litigation work, such as infringement, non-infringement and invalidity analyses. He has actively participated in all phases of patent litigation, including participation with teams working through trial.

Mr. Galliani regularly advises investors in connection with intellectual property issues. In addition, he regularly takes a lead role with respect to patent issues in mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Galliani is also active in patent portfolio assessments during patent licensing and acquisition transactions.

Prior to joining Cooley, Mr. Galliani was a partner at Pennie & Edmonds and Flehr Hohbach Test Albritton & Herbert, LLP, patent firms that have subsequently merged into general practice firms.

Mr. Galliani is a member of the state bars in California and Illinois. He is also registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
