Bill Merten is the chair of Winston’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) Practice. He advises corporations, shareholders, directors, and various professionals regarding the use of ESOPs and ESOP-related strategies in a wide variety of transactions including, management buyouts, ownership succession transactions, private equity transactions, going-private transactions, ESOP company sales, and mergers and acquisitions.
I focus my practice on business succession planning and executive compensation. As the chair of Winston & Strawn’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) Practice, I advise corporations, shareholders, directors, and various professionals regarding the use of ESOPs and ESOP-related strategies in a wide variety of transactions, including management buyouts, ownership succession transactions, private equity transactions, going-private transactions, ESOP company sales, and mergers and acquisitions.

I currently serve on the Administration Advisory Committee of the ESOP Association, and speak frequently for various organizations on succession planning alternatives and related tax-planning techniques. My work has been recognized by Martindale-Hubble, American Lawyer Media, Super Lawyers, The Legal 500, and Leading Lawyers Network.
